March Birthstone: Aquamarine

March Birthstone: Aquamarine

March’s birthstone, aquamarine, is a gem steeped in legend, history, and undeniable beauty. Its name comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning "seawater," and ancient mariners believed the stone could calm waves and ensure safe voyages. Beyond its nautical folklore, aquamarine was thought to bring happiness in marriage and was often gifted as a token of love. As a variety of the beryl gemstone family, it was also believed to offer protection against adversaries in battle and legal disputes, enhance intellect, and make the wearer both unconquerable and amiable. Today, aquamarine remains a symbol of serenity and clarity, cherished not only as March’s birthstone but also as a traditional gift for the 19th wedding anniversary.

Brazil’s Minas Gerais region has been a key source of this gemstone for centuries, producing some of the world’s most breathtaking specimens. While Brazil remains a major supplier, aquamarine is also found in Pakistan’s Karakoram foothills, across Africa in Madagascar, Nigeria, Zambia, Mozambique, and Kenya, as well as in the U.S., China, and Russia.

Notably, in 1936, the Brazilian government gifted First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt a stunning 1,298-carat aquamarine, now displayed at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.

The 1,298 carat rectangular step-cut aquamarine in art deco box gifted to Eleanor Roosevelt from the government of Brazil in 1936 is one of the largest April birthstones.

With its cool, oceanic hues, aquamarine jewelry exudes effortless sophistication. Whether in a delicate pendant, bold cocktail ring, or elegant statement earrings, this gemstone pairs beautifully with both casual and formal attire.

Layer an aquamarine pendant like this enchanting oceanic creation by Ruth Tomlinson, over a crisp white blouse for a fresh daytime look, or let this bold Cleo aquamarine cocktail ring from Chroma by G.St steal the spotlight at an evening event. Its serene blue tones complement warm and cool metals alike, making it an endlessly versatile addition to any jewelry collection—an ode to both the calm of the sea and the strength of the waves.
